Christian Barmore to sign four year extension with New England Patriots for $92 million

The New England Patriots are reportedly extending defensive tackle Christian Barmore for four more seasons, according to NFL insider Ian Rapoport. Barmore will ink for $92 million, making him one of the top-10 highest-paid defensive tackles in the NFL.

The former Alabama Crimson Tide star just wrapped up Year 3 with the Patriots. New England drafted him in the second round of the 2021 NFL draft after his standout career playing for Nick Saban. He is coming off of a career-best year in 2023, posting 8.5 sacks with another 8.5 tackles for loss.

In March, Barmore spent some of his hard-earned money on a new home for his mother, Heri. He originally inked his rookie deal for four years, $8.52 million.

As a rookie, Barmore played 17 games for New England, tallying 46 tackles with 4.5 tackles for loss and 1.5 sacks. He ended up playing just 10 games in his second season, posting 2.5 sacks with 23 total tackles. His three-year totals are now 133 tackles, 12.5 sacks, one forced fumble and 14.5 tackles for loss.

Prior to making plays in the NFL, he was incredibly disruptive at Alabama. During his senior season, Barmore recorded 37 tackles and led the Crimson Tide with eight sacks. He was named the Defensive MVP of the national championship game after making five tackles, including two tackles for loss. He earned All-American honors that year and received first-team All-SEC honors.

The NFL 2024 calendar year began at 4 p.m. ET on March 13. At that time, contracts running through 2023 officially ran out, making those players free agents. Prior to the beginning of free agency, teams had a chance to designate one franchise or transition tag player, starting on Feb. 20 at 4 p.m. ET and ending on March 5. Beginning March 11 through March 13 teams could enter into a legal negotiation with players who will become unrestricted free agents.

In addition to NFL free agency, the new year also marked the beginning of all trades being made official by the league office. April 19 marked the deadline to sign restricted free agents to offer sheets. On April 24, the deadline for teams to match restricted free agent offers sheets hit. Following the restricted free agent deadline followed the 2024 NFL Draft, which ran from April 25-27.
